Palliative care is designed for those who have advanced illness but are

continuing curative therapies. Care includes physician consultation and a

continuum of support services for the patient and family. Palliative care can

be a time to gather information about how an illness is likely to progress,

including an assessment of current physical, psychological and spiritual

needs and initial planning for end of life care.

Hospice is personal care that focuses on pain control and symptom

management, rather than cure-oriented treatments. Typically, a hospice

patient has a life expectancy of weeks or a few months, rather than years.

Hospice includes physical, spiritual and emotional care for patients and their

families and is tailored to a patient's needs and preferences. Care is

designed to bring comfort and is provided wherever the patient resides,

whether at home or at an assisted living or nursing facility.
